We
made it again! The 2001 Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour led a group of over
700 long haulers through nine states and over 2,400 miles for nine days
of power, performance and plenty of showing and going. Following are a
few pics as we traversed from Pontiac, Michigan, to San Bernardino, California.
|
 |
This
year, we took the same '65 Tempest Wagon as last year
the same but
different! The original 326 2-barell was replaced with a stout 455, tri-power,
the fading drums were tossed for Baer disks and a Hanlon Tremec 5-Speed
gave us the much needed drop in rpm for cross country driving.
We showed up in Pontiac the day before the kick off to get dialed in and
met up with a lot of other tour people all ready to go. Right behind us
is the Mothers Polish and Waxes '67 Vista Cruiser followed by their just
finished (again)'59 panel sedan. |
 |
There
you have it, life's schedule by cities for the next nine days. The list
seems long on day one, but by the end of it you're ready for more! |
 |
Pontiac
is north of Detroit by 20 or so miles. The main connecting thoroughfare
is Woodward Avenue. This is the breeding grounds for muscle cars of all
walks of life! Walking the streets you could see muscle car history with
an abundance of Mopar products with Hemi and Wedge powerplants. |

How
about an original Hemi GTX convertible! This is actually the car that
Car Craft road tested across the country back in 1968 - and again in 1999.
Behind it is a real Hemi Dart complete with lightweight bumpers, panels,
glass and license plates for street duty! |
 |
How
about a full size '69 Chevy with a 425hp/427! |
 |
But
it wasn't all just muscle cars. Power Tour provides a diverse gathering
of cars. |
 |
This
'58 Chevy from California was made for touring with its continental kit,
fender skirts, dual antennas and squirrel tails! |
 |
Remember
the incredible '69 Camaro of Kyle and Stacy Tucker? It won about every
award possible and was in all the magazines. This is their next project
- a clean '65 Chevelle which will undergo their Detroit Speed and Engineering
transformation into a pro touring monster! Watch for it next year. |
 |
This
was our porta-office for the long haul. |
 |
Friday
morning and we were on the road. After fighting morning traffic and attempting
to avoid some of the potholes, we were heading west. This fellow was in
for the long, long haul. |
 |
The
first gas stop had us pack into a small station that probably had their
best day of sales ever. Gas stops are one of the best parts of the Tour.
Everyone hangs out for a while, you get to stretch your legs, get more
coffee, empty your tank, and fill you car's. |

Motorstate/Lane

Michigan. They treated everyone to lunch and the chance to drool and
dream in their showroom - they have everything! |
