Another car that you’ve no doubt seen in the magazines is The Mule that Mark Steilow built in the pages of PHR. Also, dig the ’72 Sub in the back.

The French Quarter area has loads of live music. We spent some time at the Funky Pirate listening to “Big Al Carson and the Blues Masters” as did Jim, Gary and Ken from Mothers. Note the absence of Forrest, “your humble and obedient servant”. Must have been uploading pics and stories still.

Dawn broke far too early for many tour folk after experiencing New Orleans. It was time to head west along I-10 to Lake Charles. On the way most of the tour stopped to play on the strip and track at No Problem Raceway. We motored straight through to set up the booth.

The styling and trim on this old Pontiac definitely would catch your eye. In fact, I walked right into a telephone pole support wire while gawking at it the night before.

Tubbed Chevy II was thumping along.

In Lake Charles, Edelbrock was treating everyone to a great barbecue meal. This was only part of the line!

When the sun broke from the clouds, it got hot. Way hot. This thermometer says it all - 130°! Imagine jumping in this car with black vinyl interior.

If your buddy dared you to build and race a barstool, you’d probably pass on it right? Well guess what, someone took this dare seriously and built several barstools so everyone could race!

Fins are just plain cool. Big bright orange fins are even cooler. Having an early hemi stuffed under the hood just complete the cool factor of this early Mopar.

Why is Ed smiling? Maybe something about the day getting called a little short due to the storm clouds rolling in. After the staff warned us of the dark clouds, we tore down the display and beat it to dinner just before the down-pour started.

Chevy always brings out a list of way cool experimental and fun test cars. This ’70 SS Chevelle sports a late model LS6 rather than the original big block version.

There are no highways between Lake Charles and Shreveport which made for a nice drive. We chose an even more off-the-beaten-path route which led through some great scenery, with very little traffic.

Red River Raceway had the track in great condition and tour participants were encouraged to rip down the 1320. This ’65 Bel Air looked ready to roll.

Even more at home on the strip was this old Mopar. I saw a couple 11-second runs from tour cars. Unfortunately, the skies again opened up which put an end to the racing, but not the cruise night.

The Speed Tek group had friends driving a modified Grand National, and LS-1 powered ’69 Camaro and a healthy sounding ‘traditional’ powered ’69 Camaro. Some great cars, but none of them had an axe and a shovel like our mighty ‘burb.

Tour folk are a different breed. When this Grand National gave up the ghost, the owners bought a new truck, rented a trailer and finished the long haul.

Steve Strope of Pure Vision in California piled his family in this behemoth ’70 Newport and made the whole tour. Watch for some cool new rides to come out of his shop in the next year.

This ’64 Beaumont turned quite a few heads. It’s an A-body Chevelle with different trim plus has a Pontiac Tempest like dashboard. The Canadian coupe was a mix-match of Chevy and Poncho parts.
