Tucson-based racer Mike Savage and AA/FC owner Jim Broome chose the prestigious 57th annual World Series of Drag Racing to race at their first DragRacingOnline.com AA/FC Challenge presented by Lucas Oil. They had instant success as they came away with a win beating Series regular Anthony Bronge and his Jerry Newman-tuned ’69 Camaro in the final round. A Standing Room Only crowd estimated at 25,000 were on hand at Cordova (Ill.) Dragway Park on Aug. 27-28 to watch the racing action. Savage drove the Candies & Hughes tribute ‘Cuda to a series of five-second passes including a 5.96 in the semi’s that, coupled with an RT advantage, upset series points leader Paul Romine, who had a quicker but losing 5.95. Romine ran a 5.799 for a new track record in qualifying and was the odds-on favorite to win at the World Series. Savage was on Series contingency sponsor Mickey Thompson Tires in winning this event.
For the Bronge racing team it was their first return to a Series final since the first race of the season at St. Louis in May. Bronge qualified third with a 6.032 and got to the final round by besting veteran Doc Halladay in the semifinals.
