Hi,

Just purchased a MSD 7AL-3 for my 79' Stang. I am running a built 460 with a 300HP No2 shot. It is a drag car, however I do drive it on the street occasionally (shows & meets). My questions are: did I waste my money buying this ignition system?, and can I use a racing type coil such as the MSD Pro, or Accel cd ignition drag race supercoil #140010, or the Accel dual-mode coil #140025? for this limited street driving. The dual mode as a switch, will the low mode hurt the 7AL? I rather not use that one anyway, I would like to use either the MSD Pro or the Accel Drag Race coils? Please provide any info is appriciated. Also, can I install a switched resistor inline when street driving with the Pro Coils? Is this a good idea?

Thanks,
Bruno

The 7AL-3 will work just fine on the street as long as you use the correct coil. I would suggest either the 8261 HVC II coil, or the 8251 Pro Power HVC coil. Do not use the 8201 Pro Power coil though. That is for short duration applications (drag racing).

What about using the Accel dual mode? Or add a switched resistor for the 8201?
Thanks

You cannot use any type of resistor with the 8201, and I'm not sure about the Accel "dual mode". The suggested coils should be used.

Why canīt a PRO POWER 8201 be used in street applications?

The 8201 MSD Pro-Power coil is strictly used for short duration racing and will not live on the street.
