How to trouble shoot tach adapter.

Hello,
I have the tach adapter 8920 w/ a MSD 6al box and my tach quit working today can someone tell me how to diagnose the problem?

Turns out the tach adapter (8920) is fried, can these be repaired? Shouldn't you be able to expect more than a year and a half of service? What could cause the failure?

unfortunately, that part is potted...how old is it ?
