Default Best way to clean up rust in distributor?

I have a less than 3 year old MSD Pro-Billet FE distributor on my 390 Ford. The car is garaged in a very dry garage. Never sees rain but has nasty rust. What is the best way to clean? I'd think a total disassembly would be best but I don't want to deal with that. I guess I'm a little peeved that this distributor has rust and the orignal Ford distributor still has no rust. I put it in the MSD box when I switched in March '09. 45 years old!

Thanks,

about 3 years ago we change the coating on "all " our distributors .
all parts ( including the pickup ) is now coated with yellow zinc to stop this.

if you can give me the date code off of your distributor, i can tell you when it was made.( there is a two digit code on the housing of the distributor..example '; g7 or a w 13 )

as far ad cleaning the rust , there is two options.

1) you can call /or on line a rma number to send the distributor
back in for a complete rebuild with the newer coated parts.

2) clean the parts the best you can with either a wire brush or bead blast
the pieces( after you take it apart) and spray some good clear on it.

and yes sir, all of our msd billet distributors are built here in the states...only the street fire ones come from overseas

Default Purchase date

I actually purchased my distributor in 2005 or 2006 so it does preceed the "3 years ago".

If I plan on sending it back for cleaning/rebuild what is the cost on that? With shipping to and fro, cost of rebuild I would need to consider if I'd be better off buying a new "coated" distributor, clean my old one with a brush and sell it used. I could easily get $150 for it used, add the two shipping directions and depending on the rebuild cost it would dictate my direction.

I love my MDS system (Pro billet distributor, Digital-6, Blaster II), no issues on performance, just corrosion.

Thanks!
