Default VW trike

Hi folks,

I've got a VW trike, 1600 motor with a mild cam. No clue on the cam numbers. Single port, 009 dizzy.

I really dislike points so am researching changing over to electronic. I think I need or should use a 6AL but after that I get kinda lost. Any suggestions?

The trike is used daily and does a lot of high speed runs and I "enjoy" a heavy hand on the throttle from as soon as she's warm. In the past I've had problems with points not keeping up with the motor and flexing. I know MSD can be run on bugs as I've seen it.

We do not offer a conversion kit from points to electronic ignition. There is a company called Pertronix ( www.pertronix.com) that might be able to help you out in that regard.

We do offer a distributor for a 'type I' air cooled VW engine with a magnetic pickup. That PN number is PN 8485.

That distributor WILL have to be used with any of the 6 series ignitions; 6A (PN 6200), 6AL (PN 6420), or Digital 6 Plus (PN 6520).

The 6 series ignitions can also be applied to the Pertronix igniter if desired.

6A - PN 6200 - Basic CD ignition

6AL - PN 6420 - Basic CD ignition with a built in rev. limiter

Digital 6 Plus - PN 6520 - Microprocessor controlled ignition, with a built in rev. limiter, a start retard, and a step retard. This may be too much box for the application.

A wier set for the Type I engine would be:

PN 3193 (blue) 700-1400 Ohms of resistance per foot

OR

Pn 31939 (red) 50 Ohms of resistance per foot

Since electricity follows the path of least resistance, the red wires would give you better energy transfer to the plugs.

Cool beans, thanks. I'm guessing I could do it a step at a time as well?

From my past expierence with Type 1 VWs and MSD have been outstanding, alot more power it feels like... and plus with MSD you have the option of rev limiters and all the other goodies they have. Especially if you have a trike, I personally know you can lift the front end up, and you gotta watch your RPM's or else

From one VW enthusiest to another, MSD is your best choice before Pertronix
