Default Timing Problems

I have a msd 6al box, 8578 dizzy,8680 timing control,8984 starter saver, and using an Actron CP7529 Digital timing light.Grimaldi green spark plug wires,Power star spark plugs.

The 2 issues I'm having are the rpm on the timing light don't seem to be correct for the msd ignition?Shows 6k or so rpm at idle other vehicles with stock ignition the rpm seems to be correct.I'm interested in the rpm to know what the timing curve is doing at what rpm.

2nd issue is I'm having trouble reading my total timing on the balancer it seems to bounce or go off the tape at by sound of motor 3-5k rpm.

I'm trying to get 36 of total timing. But having a hard time reading the total with the bouncing effect.

I also had a smaller custom bushing made up I would like to try out but can't see what changes will happen unless I can get my timing light to read accurately.

Any suggestions?

You need a normal or MSD non-dial back timing light to start with.

Your timing light reads high because of multiple sparks at low rpm.

the cheaper the timing light..the better it works...really no need for dial backs or digital lights....just a basic light and a numbered balancer will do the trick.
