Retard problems?

I have a three stage retard box(MSD), only using one stage. I have the other two grounded and also have zero pills in the slots. When I use any retard pill in any retard stage the timing is 2 degrees higher than the pill i put in it. I have the retard wired through a relay to activate it due to a nos progressive controller. All the relay does is connect or disconnects the ground for the first stage when i let off the trans brake. Is this normal or is something wrong with my retard box. Thanks for any reply.

A 2-3 degree difference in amount of retard and the actual value set is not out of the ordinary.
