We have a big block Chevy and will be firing it today. How do we phase the distributor to get ready. We have the digitatl 7AL box. Someone told us to put it at 19 degrees and look at #1 plug wire on the cap, is this right?? The distributor is the low profile kind with wire coming out the side.

For initial startup, the best way to position the distributor is to rotate your engine over so that number one piston is on the compression stroke and is set at the timing position that the engine is going to fire at (lets say 35 degrees). Next draw a mark from the number one spark plug wire terminal on the cap down to the base of the distributor so that when you remove the cap you can see where the terminal on the cap is located. Finally, rotate the distributor so that the rotor is pointing to the mark on the base. Reinstall the cap and you are ready to fire the engine. Below is a link to a tech info on how to rotor phase a distributor.
