Buick 455 Quick Questions

Hi, I did some searching, but couldn't find any answers online so will post them. I apologize if they are mentioned somewhere else.

1971 Buick GS 455, engine dynoed at 485HP@4986rpm and 510ft/lbs from 2500-5000rpm. I am running pertronix system currently, but I think it is getting weak on the top end, and I hear rumours of bad quality which make me nervous.

I like the ready to run 455 distributer p/n 8552 as I can run a stock looking cap (car looks bone stock, basically is actually).Which coil would you suggest I purchase along with this? And will the stock tach still work (right now, it simply connects to the neg terminal of the stock coil).

I also belong to several online lists and boards, some have mentioned that you cannot buy a ready to run MSD distributer for the Buick 350. Only difference from the 455 distributer is the drive gear, surely they are wrong? Is there a gear they can buy to adapt that distributer to the buick 350??

I appreciate any info you could give me, and will pass it along to the boards and clubs where I frequent.

Since you are keeping your car in the near stock look, I would suggest the MSD Blaster Series Coil, PN 8200 (chrome) or PN 8202 (red). The tach will stay in the same place that you have it right now so it will not be affected by installing the distributor. As for the gear, it may be that the gear is not available to us through our normal gear supplier. MSD uses a 0.500 inch shaft on our distributors, so the gear will need to be opened up to 0.500 inorder to fit our distributor. I will check a little further into this and try to post you an update as soon as possible.

You can conver the MSD Ready-To-Run Pro Billet 400, 430, 455 Buick Distributor or to a model that will fit the 215, 300, 340, 350 engines by changing the gear on the bottom of the distributor. You will need to contact the MSD Customer Service department 915-855-7123 and request a Buick 350 gear. Ask for gear PN PRD13764 and roll pin PN HDW10084. The new gear will fit the shaft that is in your PN 8552 Distributor.
