I just pulled out my Distributer Part #8366 and found the gear to be severly worn on half of the teeth. (Some are worn very thin ) is this typical on these gears to wear strange like that. ( I have no idea how many miles it has been in the car) I have a roller camshaft setup and wonder if there is a stronger gear that I can replace the original one with. Or if not is a bronze replacement gear the way to go? I just hope the cams intersecting teeth are not worn that severe.

That is not a normal wear pattern for a distributor gear. If the cam that you are using is a hydraulic roller then the recommended distributor gear is MSD PN 8561. This is a melonite hardened gear that is intended for use with the roller camshafts on the market.
The GM Performance Catalog PN for the melonite distributor gear is 10456413. This melonized steel gear is required on all engines with a roller camshaft that is made out of steel.

I am planning on using the 8366 dist. in a stock ZZ502 with the stock hydraulic roller cam. On reading this post, I assume a gear upgrade will be necessary on the 8366.

You have called for MSD PN 8561.

Looking through your catalog, and Summit's web site, I only find reference to PN 85661.

Is that what you meant?

Thanks!

The MSD Distributor Gear, PN 8561 is a new MSD part number and may not be in current summit catalogs. However this new part number is available through summit. If you contact summit this part number will be in their system.

I realized this thread is somewhat dated, but I'm having the same problem. 1996 LT1 with a CompCams XFI hydraulic roller cam.

Since the LT1 engine does not have the "normal type distributor, but an Opti Spark ignition instead, will the 8561 gear work as well as the oil pump drive gear which I need to replace?

Thanks,

Jake

The 8561 Distributor gear is not the gear that would be used on your vehicle that gear is what comes on a MSD standard chevrolet distributor.
