View Full Version : Heavy load on gear/ shim

Have a 402 BBC with high volume oil pump. It has completely worn out the thrust shim and has about 0.50 shaft end play in 10,000 miles. Dist. gear is showing some galling. It is a cheapie GM HEI aftermarket. Will an MSD Billet Hei with the oiling hole help? Block is not machined for oil rings. Does the MSD dist. have a heavier thrust control system and strong gear? The gear on this one is showing wear from pushing on dist housing. Thanks

MSD uses a heavy duty distributor gear that is QPQ Melonite coated to reduce friction and initial wear. The small oil bleed hole that is located within the oil gallery passage ensures proper lubrication to the distributor gear and thrust surface. To encourage correct gear wear, proper setup of the distributor when it is installed is a must. The wear on the teeth of the gear should be centered, not on the top or bottom side of the gear.
