I have a chance to buy a MSD 6AL from my teen neighbor, and wonder what to do. I could put it on my1984 944 non turbo, my wifes '90 CRV, or my '02 Saab 9-5 turbo 4.

Porsche affecionados claim that the ignition on the 944 was top rate at the time, and your money might better be spent elsewhere on the car.

However, the 1984 944 (non-turbo) I own is 20 years old soon, and never had enough power to start with.

Ignition systems may NOT be worth changing on this car??? Runs perfect

I would really rather not "chip" it.

It also idles rough (shakes the car), but that seems most likely to be the motor mounts.

What kind of experience do you have with these large bore 4-cylinder Porsche engines?

Could I expect to feel the difference?

Would the MSD 6AL that I just got be a match?

Any install glitches? Porsche coil OK? Or go with the Accel Super Stack 8440C that came with the MSD

Which install pic should I go by?

My neighbor is selling this MSD 6AL, 'cause he caught crap from his teen friends for wanting to put it on his TAHOE. I need to make a decision soon before it goes on e-bay.

If this is not the best car for the application, how bout the CRV or the Saab?

I would recommend installing the 6A Ignition on the 1984 Porsche 944. The Porsche 944 is equipped with the Bosch Air Flow Controlled (AFC) fuel injection system. The AFC is electronically controlled by the control unit (CU) based on input from various sensors on the engine. The CU generates control signals for the fuel pump relay, air valve and cylinder port injectors. These devices control cold idle speed and mixture, air/fuel ratio and fuel supply. Additional fuel required for starting is supplied by the fuel injectors. Big bore engines are notorious for poor fuel atomization at low speed and this may be why you are experiencing the rough idle condition. The MSD's Multiple Spark feature at low speed should help the rough idle condition and improve the way the vehicle starts. You should also see an improvement in throttle responce as well. You will also need the MSD Tach/Fuel Adapter, PN 8920 for proper tach and fuel pump relay operation.

Is your recomendation to NOT use the 6AL, and instead get a 6A?

OOPS
I just read your answer to my Saab inquiry. I am assuming, then that the 6AL is a good 944 match.

Could you advise me as to the install pic in the manual that I should follow?

Thank You for your well explained answer.

We'll talk later!

Sorry about the 6A versus 6AL recommendation. The two units are basically the same except for the rev limiter function on the 6AL. As you already figured out, I meant to say use the 6AL on the 944. Here is the link to the diagram that you should follow to hook up the 6AL on your Porsche.

You will also need the instructions for the PN 8920 Tach/Fuel Adapter as well. Here is a link to get those.

Could I hook up the 6AL WITHOUT the tach adaptor, just to see if it's worth continuing with the entire project?

Then, if it seems to be a good match, order the adaptor later on???

Thank you!

Yes! That is ok to do that and it will not hurt anything. If you experience tach problems or shut down after a short period of time then you will need to get the adapter.
